I love Wendy Wax.  Prevously I read her book Leave it to Cleavage.  This time it's Single in Suburbia.  It's a great little romance story featuring 1 soon-to-be divorcee and her 2 new friends.  There are some great lines & the story is in many ways very true to life.

Definately worth checking out from the library--I liked this one even better than Leave it to Cleavage--if I had the money I'd buy a copy.  Sadly, I think I'll put that money toward my ever-increasing debt.  :-(

Book Review

I just finished Cassandra French's Finishing School for Boys by Eric Garcia.

It was a wacky read.

The review from Publishers Weekly said:
A Hollywood lawyer concocts a powerful new weapon in the war between the sexes in this spicy Tinseltown satire from Garcia (Matchstick Men, etc.). The fun begins when Cassandra French, a movie studio lawyer, anesthetizes three of her would-be paramours, then locks them up in her basement. There she conducts "finishing school" courses to transform them into perfect gentlemen. All goes swimmingly until French is asked out by beefcake movie star Jason Kelly, only to discover he was using her to set up a lawsuit against her studio. French gets revenge by abducting Kelly, but the plot twists come fast and furious after he accidentally electrocutes himself, leaving her to dispose of the body. At the cheeky climax, French's gorgeous, air-headed yoga instructor friend takes the finishing school concept in a startling new direction. French's penchant for great one-liners is matched by Garcia's imaginative plotting and his dead-on satire of life in L.A., Hollywood and the movie industry. The oddball conceit makes this novel an unlikely winner, but Garcia has crafted a quirky, pedal-to-the-metal satiric romp that remains fresh, likable and funny from start to finish.

After reading that review, I HAD to read the book.  I found myself having trouble getting into the story at times, stalling in the first quarter of the book repeatedly.  But I finally finished, and although I was starting to get a "who cares" feeling about the story, I actually felt a bit uplifted in the end.

It's incredibly wacky, but not too disturbing (a problem I had with Augusten Burroughs' Running with Scissors.)

I give it a B.  If you're looking for something with a little psychosis, it's a good read.

I've been reading up a storm recently, and I'll start with the ones I'm taking back to the Library today.  So in no particular order...

Vicki's Summer Reading List:  (part one)

Girls' Night In by Lauren Henderson
Is a collection of short stories whose authors include Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot, Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, Lolly Winston, Kristin Gore, Marian Keyes, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus.  My absolut favorite story is What Goes Around by Louise Bagshawe.  It begins with a man trying to end his marriage over dinner on his 20th anniversary, and ends with his wife turning the tables and walking out on him.

Leave It to Cleavage by Wendy Wax
An enjoyable paperback romance, where Ballantyne Bra heiress Miranda Smith learns that her husband is a cross-dressing cheater, that he's done *something* to the financials as president of her family's company and discovers that he's disapeared with most of their money.  She of course, tries to hide his errors and absence while finding a solution...oh, yeah and there's romance in there too!

Suddenly Sexy by Linda Francis Lee
This is the first book in a trilogy of "Sexy" novels that follows the love lives of three West Texas women who have been friends since childhood.  Each novel features one woman.  The novel covers are what drew me to the books--Sinfully Sexy, the second book, has a woman's torso with her holding a 3-layered piece of cake.  These books are pretty simple, and a bit wordy with descriptions, but in the beginning of Suddenly Sexy there is the phrase "He looked like a cowboy stepping out for the night, his white long-sleeved, button-down shirt tailored perfectly over broad shoulders, narrowing into lean hips and thighs encased in tight, soft Wrangler jeans that cupped his crotch like a lover."  (*Which is totally my new favorite descriptive phrase*)

I love the public library system!!
